The collection of hot spring hotels are found along County Highway 194, west of Zhiben Train Station, and about 30 minutes’ drive southwest of Taitung City. The Platform of the Three Immortals, or 台東必排 Sanxiantai (三仙台), it the most awe-inspiring human-made sight along the east coast of Taiwan. The dragon-like 320-meter bridge curves up and down as it leads out to a small island off the coast. Nevertheless, winter days are the shortest, with daylight standing at 10.8h in January. I’ll occasionally mention a place or shop in posts about specific destinations, but I don’t have any full guides on where to shop. If you’re carrying back something particularly fragile, heavy, or potentially regulated, it’s definitely worth at least inquiring about the cost of shipping. Before leaving Taitung, consider spending a night in a hot spring hotel at Zhiben (知本, also spelled Jhihben or Chipen), Taitung’s best hot spring resort town. It’s a 20-minute drive or 10-minute train ride southwest of Taitung City. Next up, Dulan (都蘭) is the best place to spend the night on the coast of Taitung. If you’re not into traditional pastries , then peanut nougats (牛轧糖) are your next best bet when it comes to edible souvenirs from Taiwan. The Taitung Forest Park is a much loved park for locals and tourists which embodies the Flowing Lake, Lake Biwa, and Yuanyang Lake. For comparison, the hottest month in Taitung City, July, has days with highs of 84°F (29°C) and lows of 78°F (25°C). The coldest month, January has days with highs of 70°F (21°C) and lows of 63°F (17°C). The best place to know the gastronomy of Taitung is to visit its night market. Beinan Cultural Park is the largest prehistoric site in the country and is part of the National Museum of Prehistory. Taiwan International Balloon Festival is one of the most anticipated annual summer events since its launch in 2010. Decorated hot air balloons from all over the world float in the Luye Highland air. The Night Glow Concert series is held throughout the 2-month-long festival period at night. It is one of the most beautiful scenic spots on the East Coast. Besides the view, a small, steep, and very winding road leads uphill to an aboriginal village and a few cafés and small eateries. You can also visit Duoliang on this half-day tour from Taitung. Continuing north past Dulan, Jinzun Recreation Area (金樽遊憩區) is the next notable stop. This is just a pullover on the highway, but I recommend stopping to enjoy the epic coastal view. Mushroom-shaped Lulian Island (金樽陸連島) is visible out at sea. Like Chishang, Guanshan is famous for its rice, which is best enjoyed one of the locally famous lunchboxes sold near the train station. While many people equate Taiwanese food with street food to do so is a disservice to the food cultures that make up Taiwan and miss out on some great food. Like all Taiwanese cities street food can be found throughout downtown. You might want to try the sugar-apples (釋迦 shìjiā), a local sweet fruit. Thanks to the large number of aboriginal groups in the area there are several different aboriginal restaurants in and around the city. Taitung is also home to a fair number of goat meat restaurants along Jhongjheng Rd. Green Island – A quite beautiful island off the east coast near Taitung, featuring one of the world's few saltwater hot springs. Considering the climatic parameters, the period from June to September is relatively challenging for tourism, mainly due to the substantial increase in rainfall. June sees rainfall escalating to 248mm, and it reaches a peak in August with a staggering 308mm. Along with high rainfall, relative humidity also pushes to its utmost, reaching 79.4% in June. These saturated conditions could dampen travel plans and make sightseeing less enjoyable.
